designer's own words:

The idea for this handle grew out of the standard L-shaped laminated steel bar which provides resistance to a hollow frame. After several sketches, the harsh contours of the L-shape were tempered by softer lines. The handle’s rounded back, made possible by the casting process, makes it comfortable to hold. The form itself affords varied viewing angles.
