DAS lab displays desserts like industrial objects for shanghai concept store

to design this bakery and concept store in shanghai, china, DAS lab has referenced industrial processes to create a retail space with a cool, mechanical aesthetic. using the interior as a medium to express the ethos of the client, the project seeks to establish an authentic connection between the brand and the public.

the concept behind the holiland concept store is inspired by both the curiosity of humans and the innovative technology that makes breakthroughs in the food industry possible. through the design, DAS lab intends to demonstrate an explorative spirit alongside the new idea of bakery that is key to the brand, and deliver it to the next generation of customers.

the space is envisioned as a ‘systematic manufacturing factory’, where the products displayed are more like industrial objects that were made with precision and control. the mechanical components imply the advancement of standardization and automatic technologies. the high-conveyor belt and the ever-circulating flour container, curated in an artistic way, can be adapted as scenes for display, bringing people into an ‘experimental lab’ to experience the complexity of the mechanized world and connect with the brand.

different materials, all in tones of grey, are stitched, overlapped and extended to offer the most direct way to read the space. applying foamed aluminum and stainless steel, DAS lab curated a pared-back interior to ensure the mechanical devices stand out as the leading character in the space. for the display of the baked goods, sandblasted stainless steel is integrated with lighting installations to create a contrast between the coldness of the material and the warmth of the desserts, strengthening customers’ attention on the latter.
