aldric beckmann applies an abstract pattern of colored glass to a parisian boulevard
by working with photographs of the boulevard, the design team translated the landscape into colored geometric elements.
on boulevard raspail in paris, aldric beckmann architectes has inserted a wall of colored enamelled glass to shimmer and reflect the surrounding streetscape. by working with photographs of the boulevard, the design team translated the landscape into different ranges of colored geometric elements, which they then translated into a physcial intervention.

the design process of ‘schematization’ included three steps. the first stage was to dissociate the different existing landscape elements. the haussmann buildings on the boulevard coexist with significant vegetation and wide views of the sky – this urban layout allowed aldric beckmann architectes to then bring out certain shades and color associations in the second step. the third and final step was to assemble the different photographs in an abstract way to create a landscape fresco.

the new, vibrantly colored intervention has been inserted on the entire wall on boulevard raspail, as well as the gable wall at the corner of rue notre dame des champs. the part of the wall covered with virginia creeper has been preserved while the alley on the central reservation, as well as the green façade, become essential elements for the wall to integrate into the landscape. in essence, the project aims to echo this beautiful parisian scene.

aldric beckmann architectes chose to use the enamelled glass panels to create a pictorial aesthetic. in addition, the colored glass tiles also reminded the team of azulejos in portugal, where tiles decorated with geometric patterns make up certain façades.
