it has become increasingly difficult for start up creative businesses, and especially during the current economic downturn, new opportunities for young designers are very welcome!

designboom’s long time followers and friends wayne and gerardine hemmingway are fans of the designboom mart initiative that since 2005 brings the market format to design destinations worldwide. a similar concept to our international pop up group shows and a next step in democratizing design work is their project kioskiosk. the first kioskiosk – designed by the hemingways and supported by the mayor of london and the london sustainable development commission’s london leaders programme is housed for two months (july to september 2009) outside london’s iconic city hall. as it happened with designboom’s innovative market concept, that is now part of many international events, it is hoped that low cost ‘pop up’ shops of this kind will provide a template for london and towns and cities across the UK by offering a helping hand for businesses that may be priced out of high cost, high street and prime retail locations.

sonodesign were chosen as one of the lucky occupants of ‘kioskiosk’ on the banks of the thames to sell their wares to the public for a day.

‘the day was a huge success, making lots of sales and getting to talk to the public about our designs. it is a great idea, which we hope to see more of around london and the UK’ – nick jackson of sonodesign
