FADD studio has completed the interior design for the ‘kerala’ boat house, floating on the scenic chapora river in north goa, india. the boat is run by destination management company ‘sunset getaway’ and can be rented for short vacations, providing 3 bedrooms, and a ‘sunset deck’, where one can book a private massage as the boat lazily sails across the water.

the whole boat interior consists of bamboo and lacquered wood, which protect the structure from all weather conditions and are easy to maintain. facing this materiality, FADD studio realized that it would be difficult to treat the walls with paint or wallpaper or any other intervention that needs adhesive. thus, naturally, the design team turned to colour and fabric to adorn the interior.

the uninterrupted view of the goan ports and forts
the natural colour and weave of the bamboo and wood surfaces, has served as a neutral, earthy backdrop for the new interior project. the pre-existing tones provided the design team with the flexibility to pick saturated or muted colours, forming a free, creative concept. each bed room has been assigned an element of nature; water, fire and earth. meanwhile, the dining room was assigned air, since it is the area where one can feel the breeze the most.

following the simple brief of natural elements, the interior was adorned with custom made duvets, curtains, and dining sets. the water room’s cool blue duvet was folded to achieve a straight water ripple-like effect and has shaded shams in greens, blues and yellows. the duvet of the earth room was pleated to give the look of sand piles, while small green flowers were stitched in randomness. the fire room’s duvet consists of vertical strips of textured red, ochre and orange fabrics to emulate flame streaks. finally, the dining set features lavender/grey colors to give off the air feeling.

accessories such as lights, bins, lamps, robe hooks, towels rods, vanity boxes etc were meticulously matched so that each room conveyed its element well. in addition, hand painted abstract signs replaced room numbers. fast-paced and exciting, the boat house provides a unique living environment with a playful, fun interior.
