three earthen dome structures complete family home in turkey by matthew prosser

designed and crafted by matthew prosser of holistic progression designs, this sustainable family home in turkey is made from natural materials taken from the site. drawing influence from asian vernacular architecture and traditional building techniques, the dwelling is comprised of three domes, housing two bedrooms, and one common living area.

with nature as his biggest inspiration, matthew prosser of holistic progression designs had a vision that the building would be a piece of art, yet still be functional to accommodate the needs of a young family. prosser, who is a permaculture expert, gave himself the brief for a residence ‘that will have low running costs and it will be built with an ethos that respects and merges with the landscape’.

the structure is placed on two levels, aligning with the existing terrain, while also generating a more dynamic space. despite covering an area of 44 m2, the interior feels spacious. this is achieved thanks to the high domed ceilings, the neutral color palette, and the abundance of natural light that enters through the skylights, as well as the round custom windows.

the dwelling’s construction is based mostly on natural materials, with natural plasters and tadalak surfaces completing the living environment, and presenting interesting textures. meanwhile, the overall design promotes cross-ventilation, helping to keep the building cool during the hot summers, and a 15cm thick aircrete brick structure provides excellent insulation. 

the natural, earthy materiality, along with the absence of straight lines, encourage the feeling of physical and mental well-being within the occupants. the overall shape of the house generates a womb-like calming effect, a sensation of being in a cave without losing the functionality of a family home.
