a house of white volumes nestles into a pine forest on the coast of portugal

portuguese architecture studio, fragmentos, has completed a one-story dwelling in the village of comporta in portugal. the house, called comporta 10, is the result of a sum of volumes, and it combines references to the traditional vernacular of the village with a contemporary touch.

comporta 10 is built on a slightly sloping site, surrounded by a pine forest. the design by fragmentos consists of small white blocks that are connected by outdoor passages. the volumes are orientated to maximize natural light while wooden pergolas provide welcome shade during the region’s hot summer months. at the rear of the house there is narrow pool, which offers the perfect place for inhabitants to cool down and socialize.

the program of comporta 10 is divided according to function and privacy. the large central core is a continuous open space that contains the living room, dining room, and kitchen. these social functions benefit from large structural spans and sliding glass doors to create the feeling of outdoor living. alternatively, the bedrooms are each divided into separate volumes surrounding the main block.

the final architecture has a satisfying simplicity and evokes the typical ‘comporta style’, which is known for its relaxed, coastal aesthetic. fragmentos subtly integrates pieces of the region’s architectural heritage while still creating an elegant, modern residence.
