‘photophore’ interactive facade by kollisionopening evening

in celebration of the luminale 2012 in frankfurt, danish creative group kollision, together with martin professional, and light designers katja winkelmann and jochen schröder, have developed an interactive media facade. the project titled ‘photophore’ is a five storey veil of light situated along the river main at the seven swans multi-functional restaurant, bar, office and hotel. situated in the heart of the city center, users are invited to take part in the festival of light.

by scanning a QR code mounted on the facade the people are brought to a website, which allows them to interact with the veil. the website invites them to swipe their fingers across the touch screen of a smart phone, which will make the exterior of light act as if it is being pushed, pulled, and thrown in response to input from the people on the street. the texture and dynamics of the facade adds a tangible sense of materiality to the restaurant, giving the unique building a both ethereal and vivid expression when darkness falls.
