located in a trapezoidal plot on a slightly sloping site facing an elementary school park in nagoya, ‘house N’ by japanese practice mattch borrows on mixed-use typology buildings with a ground floor with a stone masonry facade and large bay windows like a store front looking at the street. due to the odd shape of the property, the massing consists of two three-storey rectangular volumes joined by a triangular light well with a spiral staircase. the incline of the area shifts the alignment of the levels creating half-floors that add another layering to the organization of spaces and their visual connection. an industrial exposed steel frame makes up the skeleton of the structure, allowing for larger apertures in the walls. the harder industrial nature of the exterior metal siding is contrasted by the artistically decorated light-filled rooms with warmer hardwood floors and the vibrant yellow heater that runs vertically through the entire residence injecting a vein of color to every part of the home. the ground level contains the carport and spare bedroom, followed by the bedroom and dining room, and the living room and terrace on the top storey with large  strip windows offering views of the neighborhood. each of the spaces spill out onto the stairwell which is the common thread between each function, providing mixed program areas.
