turner architects’ tuscan veranda
turner architects has completed a small yet impactful kitchen remodeling and extension in southwest london for clients who dreamt of dining on a tuscan veranda. drawing from ‘the school of athens’ fresco by italian renaissance artist raphael, the architects articulated the new rear façade with three classic and perfectly proportioned romanesque arches.
fitted with glass doors and mint green surrounds, the contemporary arches offer views out to the garden and through the house. the rest of the new kitchen volume is painted in lavender purple, creating a dreamy color palette and the perfect contrast to the existing brick terraced house.
inside, the renewed kitchen and dining space is light and airy with wooden accents providing a warm, on-trend touch. the three characteristic arches are also mirrored in the interior in the existing wall as connections to the rest of the dwelling and a cupboard for storage.
turner architects describes the extension as a space ‘set for conversation: a relaxed, light, gathering space and a table as the centerpiece of family and intellectual life for sharing food and ideas.’ much like balmy summer nights on a tuscan veranda.
