the hall

designboom recently stayed at the hôtel champs-elysées plaza paris, just a stone’s throw away from the famous avenue des champs-elysées. the building has five standard storeys, 2 mansard storeys and a basement. for haussmann standards, the facade of the hotel is in cut stones decorated with consoles (‘s’-shaped item serving as a support for a balcony or an element protruding from the facade), garnishments and mascarons (decorative details generally representing a frightening human figure whose original purpose was to repel evil spirits. they are often affixed to the keystone of windows’ arcs or on doors or on lintels). on the other hand, its construction, post-haussmann period, has freed the structure from the austere style imposed by the french baron, with references to hector guimard’s design for the dauphine metro station, the hotel’s facade adorned in wrought iron and glass.

though the hotel has been in existence since the 18th century, it underwent major renovations, re-opening at the end of 2008. for the newly restored building, interior designer christine gérondeau was influenced by three elements: the haussmann style facade, charm and the proportions of the town house, with all materials and fabric chosen with the utmost care. the challenge was to bring a contemporary touch, that was elegant, while still preserving the classical 19th century atmosphere of the space – a skillful mixture of the old and new. the original doors from 1890-1910 are all still intact.

stylistically speaking, the room’s decorations are built up by contrasting sobriety and generosity of lines and materials: the headboards are covered in leather with saddle stitching with gun barrel light fittings, designed and made to measure furniture, walk-in cupboards lined with stitched leather contrasting the damask and silk brocade for the curtains of the large windows. smooth velvet for the armchairs and the chaise lounges creating a glamorous touch. a fragrance is emitted throughout the hotel, a scent which is meant to calm and relax guests.

the corridors reflect a ‘feeling of home’ with baroque style chandeliers, adorned in contemporary lampshades in pleated taffeta tailor made by the toussaint establishment. the color range used for the hotel is based on muted hues with moleskin and beige tones for the walls and iridescent wallpapers, with touches of bright colours such as indian pink stucco.
