gonzalez haase aas revamps 524 Modes Milan 

Situated in Milan’s Piazza Risorgimento, on the opposite corner of the same block as its predecessor, the 524 Modes Milan store now welcomes shoppers inside a freshly revamped interior by Berlin-based Gonzalez Haase AAS. Buzzing with white neon lighting, pastel yellow walls, metallic textures, and vibrant blue furniture, ‘the design for this project entailed creating multiple layers of design that complement each other,’ begins the studio. Gently contrasting this contemporary aesthetic is the store building itself, oozing typical Milanese charm from past years.

‘One aspect of the 524 Modes Milan store design involves preserving large parts of the space in its original state, as the existing flooring was in good condition, thus avoiding the wasteful use of energy and resources. The second feature of the design involves utilizing the existing mobile structures designed for the Assembly Project during Salone Del Mobile 2022, creating a transit space between the city and the existing store. As planned, all components from the installation would be reused in future projects by the company,’ writes the team at Gonzalez Haase AAS. 

Taking on primarily an L-shaped form that curves around the corner of the building, the store features walls on both ends of this configuration, covered in black mirrors, with the first one seemingly opening up to the existing store. The black surface gradually fades into a clear mirror, reflecting 524 Modes Milano’s lighting system behind the actual, physical space. The generally powerful lighting design ultimately showcases the entire shop with the goods and everyone inside, creating a sense of community for browsing shoppers. 

‘The overall store design seamlessly carries on from what has been developed for Modes since its inception. Each project varies, but builds upon the previous one while introducing the next one, thereby enabling a progressive development in the store’s aesthetic,’ concludes the studio
