AXOR’s CITTERIO C collection by antonio citterio

As part of Make it Yours!, a campaign dedicated to making individual luxury a reality in the bathroom, AXOR asked renowned architect-designer Antonio Citterio to develop not one but two distinctive concepts to showcase the remarkable versatility of his latest collection, AXOR Citterio C. Minimalist in spirit, with soft contours and a sensuous form, the collection includes a range of fixtures for the wash basin, bathtub and shower, inviting the touch while intriguing the eye.

two distinct designs heighten water’s luxury in the bathroom

Over a career spanning more than five decades, Antonio Citterio took on AXOR’s ‘Make it Yours!’ campaign, aspiring to create yet another timeless collection. Titled ‘AXOR Citterio C,’ the Italian architect-designer‘s latest concepts bring individual luxury back into the bathroom. From the fixtures for the wash basin and bathtub to the shower, the two very different sets showcase and represent the company‘s versatility through soft lines and shapes. The collection is born of Citterio’s belief that the object one touches should give you an idea of the luxury that water is, so to heighten the experience, the creator developed a special, textured surface as an option for the handles of the collection.

‘When I think of a product such as this, a space immediately comes to mind. I always imagine the product in a movie set, an ambiance where people interact with the product and the space,’ says Antonio Citterio.

Citterio refers to both of his bathroom concepts as ‘light boxes,’ but despite their careful attention to the play of light, their overall spaciousness and their elegant refinement, the similarities between the two concepts ends there. Each evokes its own, unique vision of personal luxury. For ‘Nature Bound Vacation Home’ for instance, the designer imagined a Scandinavian beach house—a vacation home designed for a young and active family, unconstrained by budget. Natural light is scarce and precious in this Northern setting and must be enjoyed at every opportunity. For this reason, he has oriented the spacious bathroom to the east and, instead of an external wall, has given the entire length of the bathroom over to a single sheet of glass.

Designed for a northern clime, the bathroom features bright materials such as travertine, light cement and pale birch wood (which lines the ceiling and is used for the floor-to-ceiling mechanical brise-soleil) to underline what Citterio calls ‘the theme of welcoming natural light.’ While birch is common to this part of Europe, the travertine—a porous, cream-colored limestone—is more commonly associated with the architect and designer’s native, warmer Italy.

One of the distinctive features of the concept is the freestanding travertine structure combining wash basin table and bathtub. ‘The idea is to have a completely free wall. Normally, you have the water pipes in the wall. But here, we built the washbasin and bathtub into the middle of the room, so the pipes are coming from the floor. And then we have the all-glass wall—it’s completely transparent, with nothing to obstruct the view,’ adds Citterio.

The AXOR Citterio C fixtures selected for this dream bathroom include two faucets at the washbasins, a 3-hole rim mounted bath faucet, and, in the shower area, a thermostatic module in combination with a hand shower and overhead shower. For the finish, one of the exclusive AXOR FinishPlus surfaces was chosen – the Brushed Black Chrome, making it stand out against the creamy travertine, emphasizing the slender form of the faucet from every angle.

‘It’s a dream space. You imagine the young parents, the kids. There’s music. And you’re in the middle of nature—you don’t have anything but the rocks and a sea in front of you. And you have this light in the morning—it’s from the east, this low sun. It’s the best start of the day. But also at night, with candlelight, you have this special ambience. So it’s really a dream, conceived for wellness and relaxation. You can rest in the hanging lounge chair and just look at the views,’ exclaims the designer.

In addition to the ‘Nature Bound Vacation Home’ concept, AXOR also presents Antonio Citterio’s ‘Culture Themed Penthouse.’ For the second of his two bathroom concepts, the architect envisioned a culture-themed penthouse hotel room in the Far East, drawing inspiration from the intense sunlight of places like Thailand and Bali. He proposed a space ‘filtered by a semiarchitectural envelope’ to protect against the sun with a design influenced by the Casa sul Lago per l’Artista, a now-lost architectural masterpiece in Lombardy, featuring a glazed wall and partially glazed ceiling to control sunlight. A freestanding bath mixer with a slender hand shower gracefully emerges from the floor beside the bathtub, while tall, single-lever faucets adorn each basin. The mirrored paravent conceals the WC area, showcasing opulent materials like Portoro marble and warm teak. Completing the ensemble are an overhead shower, shoulder shower, hand shower, and thermostatic mixer with shower controls, promising a sensory delight for any guest.
