shanghai-based 100architects believes in the power of public spaces to generate social dynamics and interactions. when faced with the renovation of the terrace of ‘bar rouge’ in shanghai, they found four keywords that would form the concept of their design: skyline, terrace, visual impact, and business activity. the restaurant/lounge located on the rooftop of a landmark building enjoys an extraordinary position as it has a panoramic view to the pudong district, an international attraction.

skyline, terrace, visual impact, and business activity were the keywords used when planning the design

the keywords led them to create a VIP area that they would call ‘red rouge’, situated right on the edge of the terrace, enjoy the view. the concept was to design a usable skyline-shaped architectural object which would attract the attention of clients, generate new dynamics, and frame the most photographed view of ‘bar rouge’. their aim was to create a program that could host the same or more amount of people as it is now. also to create a unique attractor that could become part of the identity of the bar, busting its best qualities.

the skyline-referenced furniture was divided into five different shapes: a table seating area which hosts activities for groups. the long cubes that serve as an informal seating area for up to seven persons, allowing enough people to stand around it. the third one is the grandstand, a curve with three stools that produce curiosity and that can generate just by itself, new ways of using it every time. the fourth one is the bench, which is a simple seating element that can host up to six people. finally, the fifth one is a projection wall that also provides space for three people.

made out entirely of corian solid surfaces, the rarity of the shapes provides an eye-catching element that is in constant conversation with the skyline, sometimes referencing, other times competing with it. the objects invite the users to interact in a different way, adding a new value to that of being part of the VIP.
