314 architecture studio inserts a frosted glass façade into athens streetscape

designed by 314 architecture studio, ‘H1002’ is a residential project situated in the heart of athens. conceived for a site in spefsipou street, the new intervention imagines a futuristic design inserted within the existing fabric of neoclassical buildings, which date back to 1870.

the architect‘s main concept was to create spaces using physical transparency, an idea made possible with the use of frosted glass as a prominent feature of the building. the blurred, transparent cell also works to light up the interior spaces. transparency is therefore utilized as a medium to open up closed spaces to both light and air. panels of frosted glass are also used on the inside of each property, on each wall, and by the use of hidden lights inside of them it gives the feeling of natural light penetrating the residence.

the frosted glass creates multiple readings of spatial relationships and their connections, allowing flexibility in the organization of the composition. the connection between the space of two separate levels result not only in a visual increase of the size of spaces but also produces ambiguous spatial relationships: zones are differentiated and at the same time combined.

arcs decorating the façades of the building also play an essential role in the aesthetics of the whole, creating a more relaxing and welcoming environment, almost reminiscent of another time while being contemporary. the building is composed of 5 different properties (one connected to the neoclassical building), all of them with great views as the building is oriented towards lycabettus hill, one of the most iconic sights in athens.
