314 studio’s resort proposal re-invents the greek landscape

on a lush plot within the peloponnese region of greece, the ‘gods and dreams resort‘ proposal by 314 architecture studio emerges as an experimentative structure that highlights the great historicity and monumentality of the area. shaped as a staggered arrangement of curved terraces blending into the local topography, the project seeks to explore and re-invent the greek landscape, its receptiveness, as well as its relationship with radical design.

drawing from the ancient greek theater and the steep topography

the studio’s design was conceptually inspired by the sanctuary of the asclepius of epidaurus, its contemplating and therapeutic character, the morphology of the ancient greek theater, and the steeply sloping series of terraces that are indigenous to the local landscape. thus, as a first step, the project attempted to acquire a distinct design identity that would refer to these elements, and at the same time generate a place of relaxation and well-being, fully harmonized with the natural environment.

in the second stage of the architects’ research, the design developed in multiple layers. the aim was to form mutiple independent rows of residences, at a distance from one other to secure the visitors’ privacy. the dwelling units unify through an overlaying design of roof-canopies, visually uniting in a single whole that harmonizes and blends with the landscape.

mirror & water elements highlight the fluid character of the project

the idea of forming the private residences as a zone that develops along with the sloping terrain, traces back to the morphology of the inclined landscape and greek theater structures. these rows follow an amphitheatric layout, though their strict curved ‘guide’ is redesigned as an abstract fluid volume. this gesture offers a variety of views towards the sea, and at the same time, with the enhanced vegetation, it makes guests feel as if they are fully surrounded by nature.

ambiences are produced with the combination of mirror dividers and water elements that follow the fluidity of the roofs. the reflections allow the composition, the vegetation, and the water elements to be repeated and multiplied while preventing excessive foreign elements from interfering between the living space and the landscape. finally, organic holes carved on the roofs, allow natural light to enter the dwellings, enhancing the visitors’ contact with the landscape and thus offering a unique experience that stimulates all senses.
