junichi sampei of japanese architecture practice A.L.X. (architect label xain) has designed a two-storey residential property, elevated to ensure privacy. located in japan’s kanagawa prefecture, the scale of ‘forest house’ reflects the context of the existing urban fabric. a large band of glazing wraps around the upper level, providing sweeping vistas across the quiet suburban neighborhood. these panoramic views also ensure a close connection with the region’s lush natural surroundings, overlooking a forest.

primary living accommodation is found at this storey, with an open-plan layout containing the kitchen and dining area. a brightly lit lounge adjoins an external terrace with a glass floor. this feature doubles as a giant skylight, partially illuminating the lower level. a staircase leads downstairs to secluded private areas of the home, which offer more limited external views. a small garden borders the front of the property, strengthening the home’s relationship with the natural environment.
