japanese practice a-study has completed ‘SRM’, a private residence built in the country’s mie prefecture. the two-storey dwelling is arranged beneath a large 40 meter roof formed from a complex timber frame that deliberately shifts the highest point of the canopy from its center. the resulting space is then filled with cubes, each representing separate functional units: the private rooms, kitchen, and bathrooms. the remaining void is then intended for common use areas.

the architecture of the scheme is embellished with select hand-crafted materials, such as the cane handrails around the large central void, meticulously woven by the craftsmen in the island of bali. the ceiling above the living room is calculated so that no light fixtures are visible, while furnishings are finished in proportions that best suit the vertically of the open volume.
