occupying a large corner plot in the south of paris, AAVP architecture has designed a new student housing complex comprising 190 apartments. situated on the outskirts of the city, ‘résidence simone veil’ responds to the various architectural styles within the area in an effort to form a dialogue with the surrounding urban context while creating an optimum space for living.

the 190 apartments range from 215 ft2 (20 m2) to 431 ft2 (40 m2), with each one including space for an entrance with a kitchenette beside it, as well as a living room and bathroom. the program developed by AAVP also includes common rooms for work or leisure, facilitating interaction between students.

when it came to designing the elevations, the architects sought to create a link between the various built archetypes that make up the layers of the district. on one side, facing the ‘cite internationale universitaire de paris’, the building interacts with la maison des arts et métiers, where it intends to blend into a ‘faubourg’ type of architecture by creating a façade made up of a variety of horizontal layers. a glass-based ground level offers a light-weight feeling, which is followed by three larchwood clad floors, and finally the top floor is composed of drilled aluminum sheets.

the selected materials respond to all the functional, economical, and environmental requirements of the building, while also avoiding a monolithic type of architecture by means of the combination of finishes. furthermore, the windows that puncture the façade create a effective rhythm to the building, as they are opened or closed by individual students.
