located within a 200-year old mansion in milan’s most fashionable district, paper moon giardino — the highly-anticipated flagship restaurant of the world-renowned brand — has opened its doors during milan design week 2018. designed by ed ng and terence ngan from AB concept design studio, the restaurant takes inspiration from the area’s eclectic history and architecture, resulting in an elegant and calming sanctuary within the bustling city.

previously used by the noble luigi bolis gualdo to entertain his guests from all over europe, paper moon giardino sits inside the recently renovated palazzo reina. preserving the original features and neoclassical façade to honor the architectural value of its surroundings, guests are greeted by a courtyard that leads to the bar. with subtle color palettes and fresh motifs, the design reflects an intimate home complete with pictures hanging from the walls.

‘my first impression of the location was ‘this is stunning, even too stunning for a restaurant!’ said ed ng to designboom while visiting the site. intended to reflect an intimate home with comfort and tranquility, every detail has been curated to the most minimal detail. light grays complemented by a distinctive green replace the dark and bold features while contrasting with terrazzo floors and dramatic vaulted ceilings. evoking the highest detail of artisan craftsmanship, AB concept teamed up with italian luxury furniture brand promemoria to design a bespoke seating collection, including bar stools, dining and lounge chairs, referencing both italian and international artistry.

‘in keeping with the paper moon mantra — ‘proving good value honest italian cuisine, in a relaxed, congenial environment’ — our missing was to create a homely and desirable destination. we wanted guests to leave with a memorable experience, and a cozy space that feels like a private residence. paper moon giardino is a true testament and homage to the former mansion,’ continues ed ng.

composed of a grande salone, a parlous, a wine library, and a traditional courtyard garden, the restaurant effortlessly transitions from day to night. overall, the sophisticated and calming space is set to become one of the most sought-after restaurants in the city.
