created by australian design studio adam kane architects, the yandoit cabin project is a contemporary take on the traditional timber cabin. located in victoria, australia, the modest single bedroom dwelling has been designed with sharp lines and an asymmetrical form which focuses on a high level skylight. the skylight provides a framed outlook from the mezzanine bedroom, and casts an ever-changing play of shadows on the raked timber ceilings throughout the day. a simple palette of raw materials was selected and developed to suit the internal and external applications.

internally, adam kane architects chose a light and clean white-washed plywood for all walls and ceilings, whilst being complemented by fresh black steel accents. externally, these same materials were used with a more rugged and weathered approach to suit the rural setting. burnt timber was used for all external walls, and roof lining, with areas of rusted steel framing window and door openings. the kitchen, laundry, and storage has been concealed behind large sliding doors, with a finish to match the adjoining plywood wall finish. a ‘block’ of concrete runs through the building, inside to out, highlighting the entrance to the dwelling, and concealing the bathroom and private courtyard.

isolated, upon a hilltop and surrounded by natives trees, the building blends in with it’s surroundings due to the restrained form and rustic weathered façade materials of burnt/charred timber cladding and rusted steel details. the dwelling’s asymmetric roof form facilitates a mezzanine level, and provides volume to the lower level whilst directing views towards the feature skylight at it’s peak.
