Aedas has designed a mixed-use project for a publishing firm with architecture that imitates a rolling book scroll. the building’s specific shape seeks to convey the ancient chinese proverb ‘knowledge brings wealth’. the vast scheme encompasses an outdoor plaza, retail outlets, apartments, offices, and a boutique hotel in the jiefangbei central business district in the heart of downtown chongqing.

developed for the chongqing xinhua bookstore group, Aedas’ design seeks to create an interactive commercial complex with a book shop strategically positioned at its center. the large store forms part of the scheme’s podium, which contains further retail and entertainment areas. the majority of the tower comprises office space, with residential storeys stacked above. a parking garage is found at a subterranean level.
the scheme’s architecture imitates a rolling book scroll
the stepped design not only reflects the geographic terrain of chongqing — often termed ‘mountain city’ — but its also interacts with its surroundings in an attempt to rejuvenate the existing urban landscape. three themed plazas are connected to the street, while green terraces are linked via an express escalator. the podium’s inclined rooftop offers lifestyle and entertainment activities, while the plaza provides a destination for users to congregate and relax.
