Aedas has unveiled its proposal for the new headquarters of SINOVAC, a leading Chinese biopharmaceutical company focused on vaccine research and production. Construction for the tree of life-inspired complex kicked off on September 28, 2022, followed by a groundbreaking ceremony in Beijing’s Changing Life Science Park, where the headquarters is currently being built. ‘Adopting a simple design approach, [it] reveals a neat architectural form to create a futuristic aesthetic and grand corporate image,’ notes Aedas Global Design Principal Dr. Andy Wen, who was joined by fellow GDP Ken Wai and Executive Director Zihuan Lin to lead the project. sunken plaza | all images courtesy of Aedas

inspired by a tree anatomy

Borrowing the ‘tree of life’ archetype, the Aedas-designed SINOVAC complex holds R&D and office towers in the south, representing roots; meanwhile, a manufacturing tower in the north evokes the ‘crown.’ Spreading outward like leaves are a series of towers connected via a corporate gallery and public space along the ‘stem.’ An elevated corridor links the split zones, ensuring continuous circulation and logistic flow. The project also sits adjacent to an expressway and metro, offering a well-connected transportation system.

Further binding the design is an impressive entrance to the south that leads to a northward sunken plaza peppered with greenery ‘to create a life-work environment in the park,’ comments Executive Director Zihuan Lin.

Through this intervention, the Changing Life Science Park — one of Beijing’s most pioneered and developed biotech zones — will be efficiently connected, further testifying to its mission ‘to deliver health solutions by innovating pharmaceuticals through interconnected specialties.’
