as well as architectural scholars dr. howayda al-harithy, mahmood mamdani have decided on 20 projects from around the world that recognize architectural excellence in societies with a strong muslim presence. developed in 1977 by aga khan, spiritual leader of shia ismaili muslims,

the aga khan award for architecture seeks to assess particularly powerful projects that have greatly improved public life and the possibilites of built form.

recognized projects are in the running for a 1 million USD prize and may vary from a poignant exploration of traditional building techniques,

to standard-setting architectural and tectonically innovative works.
