this orthopedic surgery clinic in the outskirts of shizuoka, japan seeks to share the surrounding natural landscape with users of the building through the idea of ‘persistent greenery’. designed by akiyoshi takagi & associates, the single storey structure is strategically positioned at a prominent intersection, raising awareness of the clinic among drivers and pedestrians. a surrounding band of greenery creates a buffer zone that separates the building from passing vehicular traffic.

beneath the angled roof plane, rooms are organized according to their program, with functions that require higher ceiling clearance opposing more intimate areas of the plan – such as examination rooms. extended eaves create a specified area for both arrivals and departures, while also allowing congregation beneath the large roof canopy. as part of the design, a tree-lined garden ensures a more comfortable environment for those waiting in the building for friends or family.
