spanish architects alarcon+asociados have developed a construction product that allows a six-storey building to fit into a five-storey volume. the concrete waffle slab, ‘holedeck’ is a patented system of voided parts for buildings that have large spans between supports and a high level of services. it can be pierced all the way through, meaning that these necessary systems occupy the same amount of space as the structure itself, so that no additional suspended ceilings are required to hide them.

‘holedeck’ is suitable for buildings that require multiple services, as well as big or medium spanning structures, such as offices, hospitals, schools. it is possible to keep the volume with fair-faced concrete by adding dyes to the mass and is set up in a similar way to other voided flat plate slabs.

the technology is modulated according to an 80cm interaxis, and is interchangeable with any voided two-way flat plate slab system – providing more options for plant geometry and pillar placing. air may be distributed through conventional semi-flexible conduits or through a plenum system, which requires a sealed suspended ceiling and removable locks in lateral windows.
