the american academy of arts and letters has just awarded spanish contemporary architect alberto campo baeza with the the 2013 arnold w. brunner memorial prize, second in the list of prestigious awards after the pritzker for his ‘significant contribution to architecture as an art’. baeza will joins the ranks of internationally-recognized names as recipients of the esteemed award, including gordon bunshaft (1955), louis kahn (1960), i.m. pei (1961), richard meier (1972), robert venturi (1973), james stirling (1976), frank gehry (1983), tadao ando (1991), norman foster (1992), rafael moneo (1993), renzo piano (1994), alvaro siza (1998), funihiko maki (1999), toyo ito (2000), SANAA (2002), hans hollein (2004), jean nouvel (2006), peter zumthor (2008) – almost all of which went on to receive the pritzker prize. baeza’s work is described as uncompromising, sober, and essential, utilizing gravity to build space and light to build time to execute an architecture that is a built idea.
