architect alexis dornier has built ‘ocean view 5 (aperture house)’, a handcrafted, two-bedroom residence that combines carefully selected reused timber, glass, steel elements and singaraja limestone cladding. forming part of the ‘uluwatu surf villas’, a surf and travel resort in bali, indonesia, the three-storey house sits on a sloping plot and offers panoramic views of the indian ocean.

situated on the western cliffside edge of uluwatu, bali, the uluwatu surf villas resort blends with its surrounding landscape and nature. designed by alexis dornier with tim russo, ‘aperture house’ is divided into three floors: a stone-clad bedroom surrounded by tropical green foliage on the ground floor; a living room, which opens up to an outdoor recreational area on the middle floor; and a top floor bedroom with panoramic views of the indian ocean. additionally, a small pool, a private garden and a deck are located on the terrace of the middle level.

the structure’s main material is carefully selected reused timber, combined with glass sliding doors and windows, steel elements, and singaraja limestone cladding. meanwhile, the façade consists of movable screens that filter and soften the tropical sunlight, enabling the external shading of the large glass elements that can be opened on all four sides of the building, thus changing the residence’s appearance. internally, the rooms house a small collection of vintage black and white photography by surf photographer dick hoole.
