alexis dornier expresses tropical timber structure at uluwatu surf villas resort

alexis dornier, in collaboration with tim russo, continues the expansion of the ‘uluwatu surf villas’ with a dwelling entitled ‘ocean view 3 (puri bukit).’ situated along a cliffside hill overlooking the indian ocean — on the indonesian island of bali — each private residence of the resort dedicated to surf culture is characterized by its distinct geometry and simple yet boldly expressive materiality. the radial layout of this four bedroom villa is generated as a result of the oblique, pentagonal nature of the plot. the building is formalized as a faceted volume with a large wooden roof sweeping outward from a generous centralized skylight that illuminates the expansive living room.

‘ocean view 3 (puri bukit)’ by alexis dornier in collaboration with tim russo is oriented along a linear axis and expresses a clear and intentional directionality. this axis runs from the ascending entrance stairway, through the main living hall or central core, and outward toward the sea. flooding the living space with natural sunlight, the faceted roof with its centralized skylight serves as a sculptural element for the interior. with the absence of a dropped ceiling the rhythmic timber roof structure is left exposed and offers the space a rich material texture and dimension.

the dwelling embraces a lofty and open atmosphere. a panoramic, full height operable glazing system allows the main living space to naturally flow outward onto the poolside terrace and garden, while the exposed folding surface of the roof allows each private room its own unique overhead geometry. the division of rooms across the pentagonal floor plan generates different combinations of floor-to-ceiling height and roof tapered angles. as uluwatu surf villas is dedicated to surf and travel culture, the villa appropriately features custom artwork by surf artist andy davis.
