yesterday 75-year old portuguese architect alvaro siza was presented with the 2009 RIBA gold medal by the queen at buckingham palace. the award is the profession’s highest accolade in the UK.

a pritzker prize winner, siza designed the serpentine gallery’s 2005 summer pavilion in london with long-time collaborator eduardo souta de moura but has yet to build a permanent structure in the UK. siza’s most famous buildings include the leça swimming pools complex (1966), and santa maria church (1996), both in portugal. more
