anders berensson architects has designed the modular zartmann house on a remote island without roads in the stockholm archipelago, built by helicoptering building kits to the site. instead of one big volume, the summer residence comprises four smaller ones that sit on two separate rocks, and are connected by a deck and a bridge. together, the four volumes, which contain the main house, a sauna, and a guest house, define a promenade among the rocks, walls, windswept trees, and terraces. anders berensson builds modular summer zartmann house in the stockholm archipelagoall images courtesy of anders berensson architects

anders berensson architects built the zartmann house together with scandinavian modular housing company sommarnöjen, helicoptering its building kits to the site. working with a straight kit on a hilly landscape, the architects designed four volumes on two separate rocks, with the two biggest volumes containing the main house and connected to the other two via a deck and a bridge. the house is divided in a serving volume with a furnace room, storage, bathroom, entrance and bedrooms, which are connected to the living room volume. across the bridge, the two smaller volumes contain a sauna and a guest house.

on good summer days the wooden deck surrounding the volumes serves as a living platform, complementary to the interior living room, hosting together spaces for daytime activities. starting on the eastern rock, residents can enjoy a view of the sunrise in the ocean to the east. going over the bridge one can enjoy the sunset over the stockholm archipelago to the west from on top of the sauna.anders berensson builds modular summer zartmann house in the stockholm archipelago
