influenced by the cathedral-like status many of these famous sports centers hold, oporto-based illustrator andre chiote has created this series of architectural images. the graphically drawn buildings, which feature zaha hadid’s ‘london aquatic center’ and herzog and de meuron’s ‘the bird’s nest’ are unique places able to amass huge crowds and although they are depicted in abstracted forms, they are still instantly recognizable. the basis of the works comes from mass culture and its power to project symbols that can represent a collective urban memory. after developing a previous series around museums, the artist discovered that the images could stand as emblematic icons with such a strong recognition that they could be easily interpreted through an expressive graphic composition.
