ruth asawa fans can rest easy – the artist’s beloved bronze fountain near union square is staying pretty much right where it is. apple has presented city officials with a revised design for the flagship store it wants to build across from union square at post and stockton streets. and where the initial proposal in may consigned the fountain to an unknown fate, it now will stand amid steps leading up to a plaza between the back of the apple store and the side of the grand hyatt san francisco. the building itself remains a tall, taut cube of glass and steel entered on post street. but instead of stockton street being walled off by steel panels 80 feet long and more than 20 feet high, the design includes an 8-foot-wide glass “window” that will be notched deep into the wall and extend from the floor to the roof. it then will continue across to create a skylight for the retail space below.
