apple store designed by bohlin cywinski jackson opens in the world trade center oculus

apple’s latest new york retail outlet has opened within the santiago calatrava-designed world trade center oculus. designed by bohlin cywinski jackson, the store is prominently positioned inside the bustling transportation hub, and is the only space to inhabit two levels and a full quarter of the building. the internal layout and detailing have been adapted to complement the existing structure, while accommodating the topography of the city streets above.

featuring 16 bays of storefront glass punctuated by calatrava‘s  ‘oculus’ white steel beams, bohlin cywinski jackson intended the 12,000 square foot (1,115 square meter) space to have a connection to the adjacent public atrium, as well as the surrounding retail spaces. the interiors include apple’s signature oak tables, with complementary warm wall and floor finishes designed to create a welcoming environment that draws in passersby.

once inside, customers can experience a range of products, participate in community workshops, or lounge on moveable cube seats positioned in front of the store’s east wall, which features a large 6K video screen used for product demonstrations and entertainment purposes. the WTC store marks apple’s seventh new york retail space created by architects bohlin cywinski jackson, who also designed the tech giant’s first store in brooklyn.
