the ‘asaka projects’ by araki + sasaki architects (A+Sa) is a residential complex comprising a small new house construction and the renovation of the client’s existing main house and warehouse in asaka, japan. holistically activating the site, the volumes are combined into a continuous complex connected via an outdoor bridge. the new construction serves as an extension of the main house, while the renovated warehouse and the piloti bellow become a place to host guests. connected via the outdoor bridge, which overflows with life and movement, the three volumes of the complex create a comfortable, intriguing environment for residents and guests alike.araki + sasaki architects combines three volumes into one residential complex in asaka, japanall images © nao takahashi

 

 

araki + sasaki architects (A+Sa) has reactivated the site through the renovation of the main house and its warehouse building, and the addition of a smaller residential construction. the outdoor bridge that connects the three volumes brings the project in direct contact with the exterior landscape. additionally, a wooden bench and open deck area have been placed nearby the existing stone fence, becoming a place of interaction between residents and guests.

all three buildings feature a shared material palette that combines wood, stone, and steel, allowing them to exist in complete harmony with each other. completed first, the new construction incorporates a series of pillars on the ground level, which form a sheltered exterior space. the two renovated volumes, which were completed about one year later, are characterized by subtle interventions such as new structural wooden frames and windows that promote natural ventilation.
