japanese practice archi LAB has created ‘ATMN’, a live/work space located in sapporo, hokkaido. situated in an aging residential district of the city, the property is setback from the street’s edge, with a two meter wide path providing access. a singular internal volume is organized around a centrally placed unit, which contains a bathroom, kitchen and two further versatile spaces. the angled positioning of the plywood structure ensures that the surrounding area is both flexible and comfortable with natural light illuminating the entirety of the room.

window openings are concentrated around the lower part of the structure, protecting against the hot sun during summer months and retaining heat in cooler seasons. the entire building is covered with insulation panels, reducing energy costs. with temperatures in the region dropping as low as -10 degrees in winter, underground heating provides warmth with concrete flooring able to retain generated heat.
