french practice archi5 has developed ‘mont de marsan mediatheque‘ an interactive media library located in the south-west of france. the clearly visible and distinct building forms a strong cultural symbol, providing the region with a center that brings together people of different ages and backgrounds.

standing centrally within an historic plaza, the complex’s clear geometric silhouette is aligned with the classical layout of the square, incorporating reflective façades that both mirror the surrounding environment, and allow passersby views inside the structure.

an insulating green roof hovers above the earth, while at ground level a turfed incline surrounds the library, subtly drawing the viewer’s eye upwards. at night, the building is illuminated from within, bringing life and vibrancy to the square and transforming the area into an open and welcoming environment.

within the design, a completely open-plan ground floor is articulated around an external patio, the shape of which references matisse’s paintings of acanthus leaves, and the vases of alvar aalto. this hidden central zone is used as a reading room, providing visitors with a relaxed and contemplative atmosphere. additional programs are organically organized throughout the volume, ensuring a visual continuity and an even distribution of diffused daylight.

the project was recently nominated for the london design museum‘s designs of the year 2014 award in the category of architecture.
