perched on the top of a hill in the slovenian countryside, ‘the black barn’ opens out towards the surrounding landscape, presenting panoramic views across the valley below. designed by arhitektura d.o.o., the structure replaces a previous farm building with a multi-functional and modern interpretation of the region’s vernacular architecture. developed for a businessman who spends his spare time away from the city, the dwelling is capable of hosting a range of events, from family functions to honey dispensing and the storage of crops.

externally, the dark façades appear similar to neighboring agricultural structures and also allow for the discreet inclusion of photovoltaic panels positioned in the canopy. consequently, snow guards are replaced by wide jutting roofs placed above the ground floor openings. at ground level the building is glazed with large sliding doors that can be fully opened, connecting the internal volume with the natural environment. the home comprises minimal appliances: a kitchen, a fireplace and a stairway connecting all three storeys.

at the uppermost level, the large open space is intended for various farm chores during the summer, while in colder months it can be used as a billiard room and fitness suite. the first floor also features a small guest bedroom complete with bathroom and a storage room. throughout the barn, the interior is covered with bright ash tree panels giving the impression that the property is hollowed out from a single piece of wood. furnishings are kept simple, mirroring the clean and elegant lines of the design.

intended for agricultural activities, ‘the black barn’ is a bold and modern interpretation of the region’s architecture, with generously proportioned spaces and a functional credibility that lends the scheme a distinctive and pure character.
