northumberlandia by charles jencks
impression of northumberlandia
the question is not a general whether we want to live in mountains. the ideas for proposing mountain architecture should be motivated for various reasons serving for various purposes. so i think the here discussed issue is just one of many questions and topics that should be discussed. whether it is for living, for cultural or physical acitvities, and many others.
Would you enjoy living in a mine, two-hundred metres below the earth?
No?
That’s what living in the centre of the X-seed 400 would be like.
The problem with all of these ‘live-in-a-mountain’ creations is the quality of space created inside. Living in one of these buildings would give rise to all kinds of physiological and psychological pressures that humans are simply not good at dealing with. We like space and light.
That aside, there are all kinds of issues with how sustainable these structures are. ‘Powered by solar energy’ does not equal sustainabile if you’ve moved 2000 tonnes of concrete a hundred metres in the air to put your photovoltaics on.
