ARX portugal has translated the two educational goals of ‘caneças high school’ into its architecture, providing spaces for both formal and informal learning. located on the outskirts of caneças, portugal, the stiffness of the existing classroom blocks means they to behave like ‘learning machines’. these volumes are in contrast to the informality of the new spaces, which enable a more playful and collaborative learning environment.

ARX portugal has used a folding geometric roof to unify the new landscaping and to organize the different zones. careful articulation of the structure’s forms provides physical and visual permeability. the interior classrooms have a direct relationship with the surrounding landscaping, a large open courtyard helps to define this connection. the fluidity of the spaces in-between seeks to encourage more spontaneous and open interactions between the students, encouraging them to learn from one another.
