after originally serving only as an online patisserie, the owner of giant bakes café decided to build an outpost open to the public in their own backyard in bangkok. designed by ASWA (architectural studio of work – aholic), the new building is located in the ari district of the city, which is already home to a variety of restaurants and cafes. with its striking aesthetic yet compact size, the contemporary intervention fits perfectly into the neighborhood of upscale residences and hipster hangouts

measuring just 323 ft2 (30 m2), the area is organized by ASWA to provide ample kitchen, serving and seating space. the floor plan maximizes space by placing window seating at the front, next to a long counter bar and kitchen area, from where fresh cakes, pastries and coffee are served daily to customers. in the center of the building there is storage and at the back is a restroom. the character of the interior exposes the steep roof pitch of the structure, affording a light and airy place to enjoy while enjoying the view of the surrounding garden.

the form of the roof acts as a metaphor for the delicious baked goods inside as the shape was inspired by the idea of chocolate cream being spread over a cake. the asymmetry of the gable roof gives the building a contemporary feeling, while the brown asphalt shingles which clad it give it a humbleness that helps the structure blend into the landscape.
