aiming to accommodate the increasing demand for patient treatment during the global pandemic, architecture practice AT-LARS has realized the first modular micro treatment facility in jakarta. the project is a joint force collaboration with st. carolus hospital, and it features screening and medical structures, prefabricated, quick to construct, scalable, flexible in sizes, and adaptable to various locations.

AT-LARS has realized 4 different types of treatment facilities, and each design is based on WHO guidelines for severe acute respiratory infections. the semi-permanent structures are built with scaffolding, to facilitate their construction. due to this simple technology, the facility is able to grow and cater to the need for additional medical space during the coronavirus crisis. these fleeting structural systems offer a wide range of flexibility and adaptability, as modularity allows different shapes and sizes to emerge, adapting to various needs and sites. the structure is durable, reusable, and mobile. it can be adjusted for other purposes, such as yearly emergency shelter for local flood victims.

the new structure consists of a reception area, waiting cubicles, a screening, and a medical staff area. a partition wall separates each waiting cubicle which offers a seat, along with space for a wheelchair. the facility features two separate exits, one to the hospital lobby and another one to the upper respiratory tract infection clinic. the entrance for patients and medical staff are placed at a considerable distance, ensuring protection for all. each entrance and exit are accessible through a ramp to accommodate people with diffability.

prefabricated in two weeks and built on-site in four days, the 140 sqm semi-permanent structure comprises a white scaffolding structure, bangkirai wooden flooring, and polycarbonate cladding. the corrugated uPVC roof helps reduce heat and sound coming from outside. the façade is made of translucent polycarbonate cladding to create a subtle visual connection between interior and exterior. the material’s transparency allows natural light to come in, reducing energy consumption during the day. the façade openings create cross-ventilation, which overlaps with the circulation corridor; ensuring natural ventilation inside the building.
