situated within a central neighborhood of paris, atelier du pont has completed the refurbishment of an apartment in an existing 18th century building. the interior embraces an open plan and removes solid partitions to create a contemporary living space that revolves around lightness and transparency. the concept behind the ‘radical’ renovation was to design the entire residence as a single room, without doors or separations typical of such a home.

as the design by atelier du pont is based around openness, privacy is instead created by implementing a large ‘revolving screen’ and a ‘wooden cube’ to divide spaces. screens are used between the bedroom and living space, affording privacy when necessary or leaving it open to give visibility throughout the apartment during the day. the bathroom is housed within a ‘wooden cube’, which again can be adapted to be closed or open.

the materiality of the design has been carefully envisioned to brighten the apartment and create a contemporary feel to the space. light colored timber and terrazzo brings a luxurious combination of materials and successfully complements the parisian sandstone walls that have been stripped bare. the traditional parquet timber flooring is retained, providing a connection to the existing 18th century building. the materials are accompanied by custom-made furniture and a full row of windows that give a magnificent view and altogether make for a beautiful apartment refurbishment.
