french firm atelier pierre louis gerlier reconfigured an aging parisian apartment into an open and airy living space. the natural accents throughout the apartment contrast against the mostly-white background in a contemporary combination. splashes of colored walls liven the atmosphere yet keep the apartment subtle and elegant, becoming the ideal neutral canvas for the future tenants.

the architects were tasked with a number of constraints, leading to a more optimized yet sophisticated result. while keeping the same number of bedrooms, the architects enlarged the living room and kitchen, and optimized the bathroom by reducing the space allocated to corridors. due to the many load-bearing walls and the difference in levels because of the old courtyard’s location, atelier pierre louis gerlier skillfully divided the rooms into spaces more suitable for living.

the backbone of the project is the exquisite carpentry pieces that are sparse but precise for each room. natural wooden surfaces and a center table, along with a rustic rattan chest adorn the dining room, which is topped by a woven lighting piece. the natural accents match the flooring and stand out from the white interiors. a corner of wooden batten cladding is painted white to give it texture yet let it blend with the white-washed room.

the living room’s matching woven lighting piece is reflected on the antique-looking white mirror. the wall’s olive green complements the natural brown accessories in the room and creates the perfect colored surface to offset the apartment’s white walls. the bedroom also features a colored wall – a desaturated navy blue, adding character to the space yet remaining subtle enough to offer the future occupants freedom in their decor choice.
