joyo parc by atelier satoshi takijiri architects is a facility for children with physical disabilities in joyo city, japan. the interior space comprises a series of arches in various sizes arranged in a grid, where, in combination with the thin curtains and soft natural light passing through, the space echoes the atmosphere of a forest. instead of dividing the facility with walls and fittings according to each space’s use, the japanese architecture studio has decided to gently split the area with lightweight curtains, which loosely define each zone without limiting their interaction.atelier satoshi takijiri creates arched interior for 'joyo parc' children's space in japanall images by kiyoshi nishioka

‘this space is a facility for children with physical disabilities, children who have difficulty walking and move in wheelchairs,’ explains satoshi takijiri, ‘I wanted to provide a space for children who can not play outdoors, in which they can feel as if they were playing outside.joyo parc has been designed as a flexible space, where arches and thin, lightweight curtains define the different zones of the facility. each material and color has been determined by the surrounding environment, influenced by natural elements such as light and wind.

‘the existing building has many windows, and enough natural light penetrates into the interior space, creating various light conditions depending on time and season,’ adds the japanese architect. ‘the space surrounded by arches of various sizes became like a forest. as if walking in the woods, the children discover their cozy places.’

the idea of an intricate material palette was avoided as much as possible, choosing instead materials that are often used in welfare facilities, and which only serve functionality without any aesthetic expression. the floor is made of natural wood and linoleum sheets, which have little impact on the environment and the body. at the same time, the ceiling features suspended wooden panels that incorporate lighting elements.atelier satoshi takijiri creates arched interior for 'joyo parc' children's space in japan

‘facilities for children with disabilities are often designed with priority on function, and I always think they feel a bit lonely,’ notes satoshi takijiri. that’s why I proposed an avant-garde child facility. another important thing to consider is the feelings of the children’s parents. I think it is important whether it is a space where you’d want to leave your child.’
