graz-based atelier thomas pucher has designed the winning competition proposal for the ‘salzburg regional hospital’, bringing a recovery facility to the city of salzburg, austria. merging function and flexibility, the ‘double-comb’ structure organizes treatment and examination rooms within a cross-shaped area containing the ward and nursery. a laboratory enclosed with solid slabs wraps the perimeter of the site, seamlessly integrating the program into the entire building. the strategic placement of the wings and spaces minimizes distances between entities, guaranteeing optimal performance for daily activities.

responding to the urban surroundings, the combination of the solid structure, parking garage and arrangement of the complex will work together to buffer the internal spaces from the noise of the nearby train lines, creating a peaceful and healing atmosphere for patients. green spaces are integrated along the buildings length, creating pocket parks of diverse sizes and textures for contemplation and relaxation for visitors, staff and families and to accelerate rehabilitation for patients. phase one of the project will be completed in 2015.
