with the design of the ‘casa de férias’ holiday house in northern portugal, ATELIERDACOSTA seeks to recall the poetic, ephemeral atmosphere of a childhood home. the design team consolidates the built space of the house into two floors to free up as much land as possible, presenting a simplicity in its construction and assembly. square in plan, the design takes advantage of each of the quadrants of the surrounding landscape. its orientation along the plot further takes advantage of the solar penetration to invite natural sunlight to its timber interiors.

unlike many works of residential architecture which turn inward from the surrounding neighborhood, ATELIERDACOSTA designs the ‘casa de férias’ holiday home to express a friendly dialogue with its neighbors. the project is oriented at the same lateral distance from the property line as the neighbor’s house while and is set back further from the road. this placement on the site introducing a large lawn, rather than a fence, as a barrier between the houses. the ground floor, programmed as a social space, opens widely outward to overlook the garden, alongside an extended interior solarium on an outdoor terrace.

as the area is often subject to flooding, ATELIERDACOSTA built the ground level as a sturdy concrete foundation while the upper level is finished with light, vertical timber siding. projecting over the garden, the interior stair is expressed from the exterior as an added volume. to the upper level, two of the three bedrooms are designated for children or guests, and share a balcony to the south. the access space to the bedrooms, accessible through the stairs, is a corridor that divides the house along its east-west axis, and is intentionally inflated in order to be used as a leisure space as well as a circulation space.
