augustinundfrank/winkler architekten has completed a two-story concrete house set directly on lake elsensee, in kagel, germany. defined by a curved perimeter, the residence features a mushroom-shaped base with a cylindrical core and a concrete exterior on the upper level. the ground floor is wrapped in all-round glazing, creating a transparent border between interior and exterior so that the lake remains visible from all parts of the site.all images by simon menges

augustinundfrank/winkler architekten has set ‘haus am elsensee’ on a 1600 sqm plot right next to the lake. its surroundings comprise mostly summer and weekend houses, which have mixed with the first permanently inhabited houses in the area. the project is initially intended for temporary stays, but will be permanently inhabited in the future.

the home’s ground floor is wrapped in all-round glazing, which transforms it into a transparent volume to ensure the lake remains visible from all sides. this floor is connected with the garden area via large sliding elements and a surrounding terrace. the concrete structure of the building takes the form of a mushroom, with a cylindrical core at the base and a curved concrete volume above.

on the upper floor, rooms are arranged in such a way that a variety of spatial relationships can be created with the help of sliding doors and rotating wall elements. augustinundfrank/winkler architekten has completed this level with strategically-placed openings that bring in natural light and views while ensuring enough privacy for the interior.
