french architectural firm avenier cornejo has completed a playschool for 66 children in paris’ 20th arrondissement. the nursery, which is located in the city’s new fréquel fontarabie district, seeks to add to the identity of the neighborhood through its distinctive perforated cladding. designed as a protective home-like environment, the aim of the project was to create a delicate and discreet building that fits neatly onto the triangular plot.

the scheme is enveloped with a fine lacework that forms a protective layer of perforated metal panels. internally, the perforated covering creates an array of lighting effects and acts as a filter for the rooms behind it. spread across two floors, the layout takes the neighboring courtyards into consideration, while the main rooms are located on the sunny side of the building. for acoustic and thermal reasons, the structure of the building is made of concrete, and lined with appropriate insulation and metal cladding.

located on the northern façade, the nursery’s entrance leads to the central hallway, which is designed to absorb the building’s irregular angles. given the length of the scheme, an atrium was built into the plan to provide natural sunlight for the service facilities, which are located along the hallway in alternation with other rooms. the garden area at the back of the plot is planted with a maple tree and other vegetation, and provides an rear exit to the public pathway. in addition to the scheme’s primary function, a double-aspect apartment can be found on the 2nd and 3rd floors, which can be accessed via a separate entrance.

  • I see nothing “home-like” in this design.
And the statement that “the aim of the project was to create a delicate and discreet building that fits neatly onto the triangular plot,” tells me that this was not designed to meet the needs of the children!
