PORT designs Vineyard building in Dobrzeń Mały, Poland

 

PORT’s vineyard building in Dobrzeń Mały reflects the re-emergence of viticulture in Poland through a compact architectural structure designed to support wine production and storage. Positioned within rows of cultivated vines, the building is conceived as a restrained and functional volume informed by local agricultural typologies of the Opole region while addressing contemporary production requirements.

 

The architecture consolidates multiple functions, including storage, warehousing, and small-scale wine production, within a single structure. The building’s form is defined by clarity and efficiency, emphasizing material expression and spatial flexibility. Large sliding openings are recessed into the facade, allowing the interior to be fully opened across the building’s width. This configuration enables direct environmental connection, allowing views, airflow, and proximity to the vineyards to shape the working and storage spaces.

Barrel-vaulted concrete structure organizes the cellar

 

As the program expanded, an underground wine cellar was introduced beneath the primary volume. The cellar is organized around a barrel-vaulted structure that integrates technical installations within side arches, preserving the continuity and legibility of the interior surfaces. Concrete defines the cellar entirely, forming the walls, floor, and vaulted ceiling. Glass doors are used to maintain visual continuity while allowing the concrete surfaces to remain the dominant architectural element. A bush-hammered concrete end wall introduces additional surface texture, reinforcing the material’s physical presence.

 

Vertical circulation between the ground level and cellar is expressed through a staircase that reveals the junction between concrete and brick construction. The design team at PORT intentionally exposes transitions between materials, emphasizing construction methods and the tactile quality of the assembly.

Exposed material transitions highlight construction

 

The cellar is designed to support wine storage while creating a controlled environmental atmosphere shaped by mass, texture, and acoustic absorption. The density of the concrete structure reduces sound transmission and stabilizes internal climatic conditions. Surface roughness and material exposure reinforce the sensory qualities of the space, while the combination of structural mass and natural materials supports the storage requirements associated with wine maturation.

 

Through its compact organization, material clarity, and integration with the vineyard landscape, the project establishes a contemporary agricultural building that balances production needs with spatial and environmental considerations.
